What Does It Mean to Be “Red Carpet Ready”?
We know you’ll be tuning in for the Oscars this weekend, so we thought we’d let you in on a few industry secrets about the glamourous pre-show! When the headlines run, there is always just as much buzz around what happens on the carpet as there is about the awards themselves. That’s why we make every effort to make sure that both our talent and our team are well-prepared. Here’s an insiders look what it takes to meet our red-carpet-ready publicist standards:
You know the line-up.
Each approved media outlet will have its own designated spot along the red carpet. Knowing who’s here and where they’re standing makes the walk much less chaotic.
You’ve calmed your nerves.
Publicists are the last confidante of an actor or filmmaker before they walk the carpet, so sometimes our job is to be a calm and reassuring voice. To new and emerging talent this can sometimes be a crucial role.
You’ve set expectations.
Red carpet interviews are competitive and the chances are that you won’t talk to every camera. We focus our efforts on outlets that we’ve pitched ahead of time or know are interested. Everything else is a nice bonus!
You have your sound-bites prepared.
Publicists need to be able to pitch reporters in 10-seconds or less on why they need to speak to our talent. Our talent need to know their snapshot speaking points for quick, rapid-fire questions.
Watch for hot mics!
The cameras are always rolling and microphones are always recording. Know when to speak and when to keep it shut because everything on a carpet can and will be picked up.
Next time you’re watching an awards pre-show, give a little silent shout out for the publicists dressed in black in the background of the shot, making sure that your favourite celebs’ night is a smooth and glamourous one!
