Surprise Free Concert by the Toronto Symphony Orchestra to Bring Some Sunshine to the February Blues

Toronto, Ontario—The Toronto Symphony Orchestra (TSO) will perform a free, surprise concert for Torontonians to bring a bit of sunshine to the grey days of February. The community lunchtime concert will be on Wednesday, February 26 from 12:30pm to 1:30pm at Roy Thomson Hall. Tickets are required and can be booked online at no charge beginning today - February 20 at 10:00am at TSO.CA. Seating is general admission.

“With our long winters, February can be a challenging time for Torontonians, so we wanted to bring a bit of musical sunshine to our city to help offer some respite from the grey skies. It’s our small way of giving back and thanking everyone for making the TSO part of their lives,” said Matthew Loden, CEO of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra.

TSO RBC Resident Conductor Simon Rivard will lead the 92-member Orchestra in audience favourites: the overture to Bernstein’s Candide; the theme from Mission: Impossible, Shostakovich’s intense and virtuosic Cello Concerto No. 1 and Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture. Concertmaster Jonathan Crow will perform “Spring” from Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons and will be joined by the entire orchestra for the final movement of Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade.

Seventeen year old Eugene Ye, winner of the Toronto Symphony Youth Orchestra Concerto Competition will claim his prize by performing Shostakovich’s Cello Concerto No. 1 with the TSO. This marks the first time that he is performing with a major symphony orchestra.

The concert will be emceed by The New Classical FM host Kathleen Kajioka. Kathleen is also an accomplished musician who has previously performed with the TSO.

The TSO Season Presenting Sponsor is BMO Financial Group.
